Practical tips
Getting around
Book a private driver for each day — IDR 500,000–700,000/day. The North Bali day (Day 3) needs an early start and a willing driver for mountain roads. Grab works in Seminyak and Canggu for shorter rides.
Where to stay
Nights 1–2: Ubud (close to Sanur for the Nusa Penida boat). Night 3: Canggu (arrive from North Bali). Nights 4–5: Seminyak (central for Tanah Lot and Uluwatu). Booking ahead is essential in July–August.
Best time of year
April to October (dry season) is ideal. Day 3's North Bali drive and Banyumala waterfall are most rewarding when roads are dry. Nusa Penida boats can be cancelled in the wet season (Nov–Mar) due to rough seas.
Budget estimate
Budget: USD 65–85/day (hostels, warungs, shared transport). Mid-range: USD 160–240/day (boutique hotels, beach clubs, private driver, restaurant dinners). Add ~USD 30–40 for the Nusa Penida boat and ~USD 15 for Jatiluwih entry.
5-Day Bali trip — common questions
?Is 5 days enough to see Bali?
Five days covers the main regions well — Ubud, Nusa Penida, North Bali, the west coast and the south cliffs. You'll have seen more of Bali than most visitors. If you can extend to 7 days, consider adding Amed (snorkelling + WWII wreck diving) or a night in Munduk village.
?Can I skip the North Bali day?
You can, but Day 3 is the most unique day on this itinerary — Jatiluwih and Ulun Danu Beratan are genuinely off the south Bali tourist trail. If you're short on energy, drop Banyumala and just do Jatiluwih + the lake temple.
?What's the difference between Canggu and Seminyak?
Seminyak is more polished — upscale boutiques, beach clubs and fine dining. Canggu is younger and more relaxed — surf culture, healthy cafes, digital nomad energy and Echo Beach. Most visitors prefer to experience both, which is why this itinerary splits nights between the two.
?Can I do Nusa Penida as a day trip from Ubud?
Yes — leave Ubud by 6 AM to catch the early boat from Sanur, and you'll be back in Ubud by 8–9 PM. Hire a local driver on the island. The day is long but very worth it.
?Is the Banyumala waterfall hike safe?
The 20-minute trail is slippery but manageable if you take it slowly and wear shoes with grip. Avoid it after heavy rain when the path becomes dangerous. There's no entry fee and very few tourists — it's one of North Bali's best-kept secrets.
?How do I get around Bali by taxi or ride-hail?
Grab is the most reliable option. In Ubud and Canggu, Grab drivers can't always pick up near temple gates or narrow lanes — your hotel can arrange a local driver instead. Bluebird is the most trustworthy metered taxi company. Avoid unlicensed taxis at tourist spots.
?What apps are useful for travelling in Bali?
Grab — ride-hailing and food delivery. Gojek — local alternative, slightly cheaper. Google Maps — works well, though some Ubud back roads aren't accurate. XE Currency — IDR exchange rates. WhatsApp — drivers, hotels and local businesses communicate via WhatsApp.
?What should I do if it rains?
Carry a packable raincoat — Bali rain is usually a short, heavy downpour that clears within an hour. For North Bali, check conditions before the drive — mountain roads can be foggy. Indoor alternatives: ARMA Museum in Ubud, spa day in Seminyak.
?What should I do if I get sick?
Stick to bottled water and avoid ice at street stalls to prevent Bali Belly. If symptoms are serious, BIMC Hospital in Kuta and Siloam Hospital in Denpasar are the most reliable for tourists. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended.
?What are the emergency numbers in Bali?
Police: 110. Ambulance: 118. Tourist Police (English-speaking): +62 361 224 111. Your hotel front desk is also a reliable first point of contact for any emergency.
